Class Descriptions

1) Mitres by Design: The magic of mitres
Saturday a.m., 9/26, 3 or 4-hr class

Jane loves mitered squares – grab one by its corner and you have a diamond! The design possibilities are endless, and the looks they create are simply stunning. Mitres are knitted in garter stitch with a simple decrease, resulting in a virtually seamless and colorful garment. There’s nothing new about the technique: it’s often used for throws and cushions. What is new are the styles created by designers like Jane. During the class, Jane will show samples demonstrating her use of mitres to create fashionable garments.

Materials DK/8ply wool in 2 colors 50g each, 4mm ndls. A small pouch or sock will be commenced in the class.

2. Texture: Manipulating decreases & increases and their possibilities.
Saturday p.m., 9/26, 3 or 4-hr class

If Jane is not knitting colour then it has to be texture. In this class, we will work a purse which incorporates a combination of stitches. Stitches will include bobbles and cables and will range to bells, leaf lace and some short row shaping for good measure! The increases and decreases worked in these sts will demonstrate techniques that are also used in garment shaping. A great example using textured stitches is the Patchwork Jacket.

Materials DK/8ply weight wool one colour – about 40g – 4mm/ US #6 ndls + cable ndle.

3. Fit and Style:
Sunday, 9/27, 6-hour class

In this class Jane will share some of the tricks and techniques she has learned over her years of designing hand knits and making to measure. Learn the steps of drafting a pattern to your own measurements. Explore how you can take these measurements and convert existing patterns, or work a tension swatch and design your own garment to fit.

This class covers everything from A-line shaping hip to bust, to the importance of armhole shaping and what should ‘fit’ and where ‘ease’ is essential. Bring a favorite garment, and we’ll look at the key ingredients to create a favorite. If you have a yarn you wish to knit, bring a tension swatch along to the class, too.

Jane will show garments she has designed and explain how she approaches her designs and sizing options. Also, she will discuss how designing for a team of knitters is different from designing for a book or magazine.
